Old School RuneScape, or OSRS, is a game that has been around for over a decade and has a dedicated following. One of the biggest pros of playing OSRS is its large and active community despite its age, the game continues to receive updates and new content, and the community plays an active role in offering feedback and requesting new features. 

This creates a sense of community and belonging for players, making the game more enjoyable and engaging. Additionally, for old-school gamers who grew up playing the game, there is a sense of nostalgia associated with playing OSRS, which can be a major draw for some players.

However, there are also some cons to consider when deciding whether or not to play OSRS. The game’s graphics are outdated and may not be appealing to everyone. Additionally, the game play can be very grindy and goal-oriented, which may not be enjoyable for all players. 

Another potential downside is the game’s pay-to-play model, which requires a membership subscription to access all of the game’s content. However, for those who are willing to invest the time and money, the game can be very rewarding and enjoyable.

For a quick nostalgia ride it shouldn’t disappoint older players. Others who are used to more bells and whistles will find the game challenging at times. While RuneScape is one of the oldest MMORPGs with two decades of history behind it, the game has an appealing allure about it. 

No matter how long you have been away from RuneScape, getting ready for current content is never a big deal. You might not have played this game in a decade, and you can still  level up quickly and be ready to take on some of the toughest bosses back in the game after a week or two. 

One of the biggest problems with MMORPGs and even live looters is that your gear loses value over time if you stop playing. It’s understandable that developers implement systems like games that try to trick you into playing each expansion so you don’t feel like you’re missing out. But it can also lead to burnout and RuneScape ensures that you won’t feel left out if you take a break.  

Jagex hosted the winter summit late last year, which announced its content plans for 2023. Old School RuneScape recently received the Grandmaster Quest following Desert Treasure, a quest that’s been around for nearly two decades. If you were present when Desert Treasure was released, you can imagine how excited many gamers were when its sequel was announced. Desert Treasures II is coming to Old School RuneScape in the summer of 2023 and is expected to bring new bosses and  content. 

More social features will be coming to the logging, always a fan-favorite activity. Secrets of the North, a master-level quest, is also now in the game with awesome single-player boss encounters. The Bounty Hunter mini-game is also returning to the game that will delight PvP fans. And I’d expect more content in 2024 and beyond, so RuneScape isn’t going away and there’s still plenty of new content to discover every year. 

Ultimately, whether or not OSRS is worth playing depends on personal preferences and priorities. For those who enjoy the game’s community, nostalgia factor, and gameplay, it can be a highly engaging and enjoyable experience. However, for those who prefer more modern graphics and gameplay mechanics, or who do not enjoy the grindy nature of the game, it may not be the best choice. 

Other games, such as Ultima Online or EverQuest, offer a similar sense of nostalgia and old-school game play mechanics, which may be a better fit for some players.
